Southern Candied Yams - The New King of Soul Food Side Dishes

Southern candied Yams was a popular topic of discussion last week between friends of mine. Before this traditionally holiday side dish  was reserved for special occasions. But now it seems to have grown into a increasingly popular treat and continues to expand into more months of the year, not just in the fall and winter.

Yes, the candied yams recipe has quietly and quickly passed traditional soul food side dishes as collard greens, black eyed peas and  macaroni and cheese. It has grown in popularity faster than any of those soul food side dishes and continues to expand.

This fact is verified by the number of recipe sites getting visitors on it's candied yam recipes, not just during Thanksgiving and Christmas, but in the spring and summer months as well.  We discussed many reasons why  the popularity of this dish continues to grow. The most logical reasons floated to the top of our discussion. For example, people continue to gravitate to this southern side dish because it represents the holiday spirit. That feeling is  festive, happy and joyous. This is their attempt to carry that holiday feeling into the non-holiday months more.

The other theories deal with the ease of making the dish, the cost of yams and their year around availability now. All of these reasons factor into the equation of why candied yams continues to grow in popularity.  Another reason for the popularity is the health benefits of yams in the diet. They provide a healthy dose of vitamin A to the meal. Now you know.
